My Story

My Profile

With more than 35 years of experience in information technology, software engineering, digital accessibility, project management, diversity leadership, and disability advocacy, I help organizations build more accessible, innovative, and productive workplaces. My expertise lies in developing practical, performance-driven strategies that improve digital experiences, strengthen workforce inclusion, and create sustainable business growth.

As an Accessibility Information Technology Specialist, I work with organizations to integrate accessibility into digital communications, technology design, and business operations. By combining technical expertise with lived experience, I help businesses uncover opportunities that increase productivity, expand market reach, and unlock the potential of talented individuals who are too often overlooked. I am also a frequent keynote speaker and workshop facilitator, presenting on digital accessibility, inclusive leadership, disability employment, and accessible innovation.

My professional journey has been shaped by resilience and determination. Diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of five and completely losing my vision by age twenty, I pursued a career in technology with the conviction that disability should never limit opportunity. That perspective has strengthened my commitment to helping organizations recognize accessibility not as an obligation, but as a catalyst for innovation, customer engagement, and business success.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Western Ontario in 1978. During my studies, I established and directed one of Canada’s first Braille production facilities and digital information research centres for people who are blind or have low vision, while serving on the University’s Presidential Advisory Council on student accommodations.

My career began at Air Canada, where I contributed to the development of one of the first PC-based back-office accounting systems for travel agencies. I later held senior technical roles with two major Canadian corporations, building expertise in software development, systems design, technical support, product development, and project management.

During my career at IBM Canada, I served as a subject matter expert supporting the IBM Accessibility Team, conducting web accessibility evaluations and contributing to a wide range of client projects. I also played an active leadership role in advancing workplace diversity and inclusion. My contributions included serving on the IBM CEO Diversity Leadership Council, advising recruitment teams on inclusive hiring practices, speaking at government employment conferences and university recruitment events, presenting at corporate diversity and educational programs, and founding the IBM Canada People with Disabilities Diversity Business Resource Group.

As a consultant and project leader, I have collaborated with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and employers to develop practical accessibility solutions and organizational best practices. Through consulting engagements with businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations, I have developed accessibility strategies, workplace accommodation programs, and digital inclusion initiatives that enable organizations to achieve measurable business results while empowering individuals to reach their full potential. I also served as National Director of Technology for a Canadian nonprofit organization, leading the planning and implementation of a $30 million information technology infrastructure transformation initiative. In addition, I have worked with manufacturers of assistive technologies, contributing to product design, usability testing, and user education for Braille and speech-enabled technologies.

Beyond my professional career, I have always embraced challenges that demonstrate the importance of perseverance and adaptability. I have hiked, canoed, and explored the wilderness of Northern Ontario and the Canadian Rockies, experiences that have reinforced my appreciation for Canada’s natural landscapes and the value of diversity in all its forms.

I am recognized for combining strategic thinking, technical expertise, and effective communication to solve complex business challenges. My approach is collaborative, practical, and results-oriented, helping organizations transform accessibility into a competitive advantage that enhances innovation, strengthens customer relationships, and builds more inclusive workplaces.

In today’s rapidly evolving digital economy, accessibility is no longer simply a legal or social responsibility—it is a business imperative. I am committed to helping organizations leverage inclusive technology and accessible digital communications to create exceptional customer experiences, attract diverse talent, and achieve lasting success.
